THE HINDE FAMILY

I have recently been contacted by Peter Warsop, a descendant of Samuel Hinde who I researched some time ago https://oldwhittingtonops.com/samuel-hinde/

He has given me further information on the Hinde family and the legacy John Hinde left to the 'poor of Whittington', the update can be read at https://oldwhittingtonops.com/the-hinde-family/
My thanks to Peter Warsop.

Whittington Hall

This picture was posted on the Chesterfield and Area History and Genealogy Facebook page by Rob Marriott.
Whittington Hall was the home of the Dixon family and was on the border of Old and New Whittington. When the Dixon family lived there they were one of the main landowners in Whittington and held the major share of the Manor of Whittington.

CHARLES STEADE

I remember many years ago when I was a very young girl going with my grandfather (Percy Parker) to visit the owner of Broom House on Broomhill Road.  This would have been 1960/61. All I remember was  a big house, with a grand entrance and a very well dressed gentleman!

I decided to try and trace the life of one of the residents of Broom House, Charles Steade he lived there from approx. 1830 until his death in 1860.

My research can be read at CHARLES STEADE – Old Whittington One Place Study (oldwhittingtonops.com)

ANN ST JOHN

Ann St John worked at Whittington House in the service of Frederick Swanwick. She died during the night of 14th August 1838.

The inquest report from the Derbyshire Courier 18th August 1838 states that Ann died "by the visitation of God". I have never seen that verdict before.

She was buried the day after she died on August 15th in Old Whittington churchyard and in the burial record there has been written "Received of Charles Grimes the sum of one pennyfor allowing the remains of his sister Ann St John to be conveyed into the rectory lane for internment" signed by the Curate R Robinson.

I visited her grave today at St Bartholomews the headstone is still there but the wording is a bit faded now.
