Whittington shops c1870

Looking through the old papers I found these
adverts in the Derbyshire Times 23 December 1871.
I didn't realise there was a shop at Mount Pleasant, where it looks like you could buy anything you needed.
The butchers advert shows the breadth of products that he suppled at Christmas.
Fletchers furniture warehouse selling anything from furniture to wallpaper and paraffin.
There was also a cobblers and a post office, you really didn't need to travel to Chesterfield for anything.

Entertainment at Old Whittington

I find these newspaper excerpts really interesting they are full of the names of local people Swanwick, Aldam, Holford, Creed to name but a few and give an insight into the entertainment on offer in 1896.

Taken from Derbyshire Times Chesterfield Herald 15th February 1896.

SEAMAN BREARLEY

Found this in the Derbyshire Courier 6th July 1915 Leo Brearley was the only child of Harry Brearley who was living at Elmwood House at this time. Interesting information on how the POW's were looked after in WW1.
Follow up in the Lynn Advertiser on 16th July 1915, by which time Leo had returned to the Naval Division at Crystal Palace.
Leo survived the war and returned to Whittington where he married in 1919.
