In this month of the centennial of the Armistice we remember the following men from Old Whittington and the Brushes who died in November between 1914-1918.
Charles Leggitt 5th November 1917
Bernard Dyson 6th November 1918
Reginald Draycott 11th November 1915
Matthew Clayton 22nd November 1915
Walter Butt 30th November 1917
I have already researched Matthew's,Bernard's and Reginald's stories and they can be read at https://oldwhittingtonops.com/
IN FLANDERS FIELD
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
